Understanding Retail Waste Logistics – Opportunities for a More Sustainable Approach

چکیده
Introduction With the introduction of the EC Directives on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) (2002/96/EC), the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (2002/95/EC), and Packaging and Packaging Waste (94/62/EC), the onus is on retailers and manufacturers to reduce their waste output and better manage their respective logistics operations by participating in specific waste take-back schemes. Waste and recyclate management should be seen as a key component in all reverse logistics processes but should first be considered in the context of initial source reduction strategies to minimise waste production (Wu et al., 1994; Marien, 1998). Using Winchester High Street as a case study, this paper investigates the waste ‘take-back’ mechanisms currently employed by the various businesses and explores the options for more sustainable approaches.

Understanding Retail Supply Chains to Enable ‘greener’ Logistics
Introduction Over the past 30 years, there have been many urban freight surveys undertaken by local authorities across the UK, in an attempt to understand freight issues at the local level (Allen et al., 2008). Many of these focused on the supply chains delivering ‘core’ goods to retailers whilst some made an attempt to go further and quantify the impacts of service vehicle activity to gain a m...
متن کاملUnsaleable Grocery Products, their Residual Value and Instore Logistics
Purpose: The aims of this paper are (1) to explore the complexities of regularly implemented as well as irregularly occurring – sometimes improvised – instore logistics processes related to products which are declared unsaleable and (2) to identify the challenges and opportunities in managing instore logistics processes related to unsaleable products in grocery stores. Methodology: We apply an ...
متن کاملUsing Metaheuristic Algorithms Combined with Clustering Approach to Solve a Sustainable Waste Collection Problem
Sustainability is a monumental issue that should be considered in designing a logistics system. In order to incorporate sustainability concepts in our study, a waste collection problem with economic, environmental, and social objective functions was addressed. The first objective function minimized overall costs of the system, including establishment of depots and treatment facilities. Addressi...
متن کاملLogistics and the waste sector: a London case study
London has traditionally exported most of its waste to former mineral workings in surrounding counties for landfill. Many of these sites are being filled and opportunities for new sites are limited. Virtually all waste reprocessing and recycling facilities, with the exception of textile sorting and some facilities for glass and organic waste composting, are outside London. The Mayor of London’s...
متن کاملA Stochastic Programming Approach with Improved Multi-Criteria Scenario-Based Solution Method for Sustainable Reverse Logistics Design of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)
Today, the increased public concern about sustainable development and more stringent environmental regulations have become important driving forces for value recovery from end-of-life and end-of use products through reverse logistics. Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) contains both valuable components that need to be recycled and hazardous substances that have to be properly trea...
